Child abuse of any kind is very disturbing. Many don’t realize, however, that child neglect is also a form of child abuse. Child neglect is just as damaging as physical and emotional abuse. Neglect often goes unnoticed because people simply do not realize it is abusive behavior.
What is Child Neglect?
Child neglect is basically a pattern of failing to take care of a child’s basic needs. This includes the right type of clothing, enough food, attention, and hygiene. Sometimes a parent is just physically unable to take care of a child, because of an illness. Or other times the neglect could come because of a parent’s addiction to alcohol or drugs. Sometimes, parents are just unfit for no particular reason. Child neglect is hard to spot, but needs to be stopped just like physical or emotional abuse.
Signs of Child Neglect
There are signs you can look for to recognize child neglect.
1. Ill fitting or inappropriate clothing. If a child is wearing shorts in the winter or doesn’t have the right shoes for the weather, this could be a sign of neglect.
2. Poor hygiene. If a child is frequently unbathed, doesn’t have his hair combed, or has noticeable body odor, chances are the child is neglected.
3. Left alone frequently. If you notice that children are left home a lot, especially young children, this is neglect. Those who neglect their children often leave for hours or days without providing any proper supervision for their children.
4. Illness or physical injuries gone uncared for. If a child is sick or hurt and is not getting the right care, this is another sign of neglect. If you see a child who has had a cold for several weeks or a cut that isn’t healing, be sure to look into the family situation.
Child neglect is just as dangerous as other types of abuse. Be sure to contact the authorities and help the children.
