If you are a father seeking custody of your children, you may feel like the cards are stacked against you. While it does seem more difficult to get custody if you are a dad, it is more common nowdays. However, in order to convince the courts that you are a better parent than the mother, you’ll need to know a few things. Keep these tips in mind as you seek custody of your children.
1. Don’t waste time. If you believe you would be a better parent than your ex-wife, don’t waste any time. Immediately begin preparing the paperwork and necessary documentation you’ll need in court.
2. Reassure your children. This is a scary time for your children. They may not understand why mom and dad are getting a divorce. Take the time to reassure your children that you love them and you will do all you can to be a big part of their lives. The more time you can spend with your children now, the better you’ll be in the long run.
3. Be involved. You have just as much say in your children’s future as your ex-wife does. Don’t let her make all the decisions herself. Stay involved as much as possible and make sure she knows you want to be a part of the decision making process for your children.
4. Remember why you are fighting for custody. Gaining custody of your children is about your kids, not about getting back at your ex-wife or trying to make life miserable for her. If your only reason for seeking custody is revenge, then it’s time to move on. That just isn’t healthy for your kids.
Fathers have every bit as much right to be full-time parents as mothers. While it may be a long fight to the end, you can get custody of your children.
